How To Get The Best Deal On An Rv Fifth Wheel
It is time to retire and all you can think about is an RV, fifth wheel to be exact. You have been picturing yourself driving down the road in it for years. In fact, you can hear the roar of the engine and feel yourself driving it right now. Still, you are a smart buyer. Before you jump in and buy one, you are going to do some research to find out how to get a good deal.
New vs. Used RV
In order to get the best price, you need to consider new or used. Obviously, used RVs are going to be cheaper than new. However, if you just cannot stand the thought of buying a used RV, then purchasing used will only waste your money.
• Advantages of Used:
o Slower depreciation
o More RV for you money
o Finding fifth wheels in excellent condition is easy
• Advantages of New:
o No one has ever used it
o You know the full history of the vehicle
Once you decide on new or used, you will need to start shopping around.
Online vs RV Lots
In the past, if you wanted to look at RVs or get a feel for how they looked, then you needed to go to a RV dealer. However, the Internet has made this much simpler. Most RV dealers are online making shopping for a new or used RV easy.
When you shop online first, you get the added benefit of seeing RVs from across the country. From the comforts of your own home, you surf the Web jotting down notes about features you like. Then when you know what you want in a fifth wheel, you can start shopping for one with everything you need to feel comfortable.
When you do find the fifth wheel that looks and feels right, then you can start the buying process.
Get a Good Deal
Just like a car, you do not pay sticker price for a RV. The sticker price is the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), which is generally 40% higher than what the dealer paid for it. RV dealers do have to make a profit to stay in business. Therefore, you should expect to pay anywhere from 15%-30% over their cost.
To calculate the approximate cost to the dealer, take the sticker price and divide it by 1.4. This will give you an idea about how much they paid and where you can start the bidding.
